LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy

Affirming Therapy for LGBTQ+ Individuals Exploring Identity, Healing, and Authenticity

Being LGBTQ+ can be a source of pride, joy, resilience, creativity, and community. At the same time, many LGBTQ+ people navigate experiences of discrimination, invisibility, rejection, or pressure to hide important parts of themselves in order to feel safe, accepted, or loved.

These experiences can leave lasting impacts on self-esteem, relationships, mental health, and our sense of belonging.

As an LGBTQ+ affirming psychologist, I provide therapy for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals throughout California. My goal is to create a space where all aspects of your identity are welcomed, respected, and understood.

Whether you are seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, identity exploration, or life transitions, therapy can provide an opportunity to better understand yourself and build a life that feels more authentic, connected, and meaningful.

Common Reasons LGBTQ+ Clients Seek Therapy

Many LGBTQ+ clients come to therapy for support with:

  • Coming out and identity exploration

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Minority stress and discrimination

  • Internalized stigma and shame

  • Family rejection or conflict

  • Relationship challenges

  • Gender identity and expression exploration

  • Religious trauma

  • Loneliness and social isolation

  • Self-esteem and confidence

  • Career and life transitions

  • Building affirming community and belonging

Minority Stress and Mental Health

Many LGBTQ+ people have experienced discrimination, rejection, invisibility, or pressure to hide important parts of themselves. These experiences can contribute to anxiety, shame, self-doubt, relationship difficulties, and a diminished sense of belonging. Therapy can provide a space to better understand these experiences while cultivating greater self-acceptance and resilience.

These responses are often understandable adaptations to difficult social environments rather than personal shortcomings.

Therapy can help you better understand these experiences and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Therapy for LGBTQ+ Adults and Emerging Adults

Many of my clients are navigating important developmental transitions while also exploring their identities and relationships.

You may be:

  • Coming out later in life

  • Exploring your sexuality or gender identity

  • Navigating dating and relationships

  • Building chosen family and community

  • Managing family expectations

  • Recovering from harmful or invalidating experiences

  • Seeking greater authenticity and self-acceptance

Therapy can provide support as you move through these transitions while developing greater confidence, clarity, and self-trust.

My Approach

As a psychologist, educator, researcher, and advocate, I have spent more than a decade supporting LGBTQ+ communities through clinical work, research, teaching, and community engagement.

My research has focused on LGBTQ+ mental health, minority stress, bisexuality, self-compassion, identity development, and resilience. I teach graduate-level courses in LGBTQ+ affirming mental health care and human sexuality. I also organize an annual symposium dedicated to training LGBTQ+ affirming mental health professionals.

My therapeutic approach integrates psychodynamic, interpersonal, multicultural, mindfulness-based, and self-compassion-informed perspectives. Together, we can explore how your relationships, life experiences, identities, and social contexts have shaped your experiences while identifying pathways toward healing and growth.

Therapy Can Help You

  • Develop greater self-acceptance and self-compassion

  • Heal from shame, stigma, and rejection

  • Strengthen relationships and communication

  • Navigate identity exploration and life transitions

  • Build resilience and emotional well-being

  • Cultivate deeper authenticity and connection

  • Experience greater joy, belonging, and fulfillment

I believe therapy is not only about reducing distress. It is also about creating space for growth, connection, freedom, empowerment, and the possibility of living more fully as yourself.
